N2 - This study investigates form and size of the pneumatic cavities in Callithrixjacchus. We confirm the presence of a true maxillary sinus in Callithrixjacchus. Regarding the frontal sinus pneumatization, however, there are conflicts with the CT data and previous accounts. The histological analysis suggests the absence of a true frontal sinus in Callithrixjacchus. Instead, the nasal cavity forms a frontal recess that enlarges into the interorbital region. This recess does not form a frontal recess (sensu stricto). It is covered with olfactory mucosa and contains nerve fibers. In addition, our investigations suggest a minor sexual dimorphism and a minor asymmetry in Callithrixjacchus. The analysis of different cranial dimensions and the diameter of the head of the femur with regard to the volumes of nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses shows a high correlation between volume of the maxillary sinus and nasal cavity, as well as between face height and skull length.
