  • Introduction: In our examinations of sagittal sections of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of human and Cercopithecus mona preparations, we analyzed the protrusive border movement of the TMJ. The protrusive function can be described as a dimeric link chain (DLC). The contour of the eminence and fossa, the tangent of inflexion and the length and the angle between protrusive DLC and the Frankfort plane (FP) are examined. Material and Methods: Our experiments were performed with sagittal sections of 9 TMJ impressions of human preparations and 20 TMJ impressions of cercopithecus preparations. The convex and concave curves of the contour of the eminence and the fossa are approximated by circles. The inflection Point (IP) is located at the transition from the convex to concave. In some layers it was not possible to determine an IP but instead an inflexion area. The connecting line of the radial center of the eminence and the radial center of the condyle is the protrusive DLC. We examine the length and the angle between protrusive DLC and FP. Results: The contours of the joint surfaces show many morphological variations. The inclination of the tangent of inflexion is steepest in the central parts of the joint. The length of the DLC grows significantly in the central parts of the TMJs. The angle of the DLC to FP does barely changes, the DLCs run nearly parallel. Discussion: Although there are lots of morphological variations, the biomechanical correlation can be found in all sections. Because of the nearly parallel course of the protrusive DLC we assume that they all point to the momentary axis of rotation.
