  • In this doctoral thesis the paranasal sinuses of strepsirrhine primates were examined on the basis of micro-CT scans. The material consisted of 24 predominantly adult skulls which were divided into two infraorders and whose sex was unknown. The results aim at attaining new insights concerning the morphology of the paranasal sinuses in strepsirrhine primates and the quantitative correlations between the size of the paranasal sinuses and selected skull measurements. All strepsirrhine primates have a maxillary sinus arranged in pairs. Mostly the maxillary sinus is enlarged by frontal recesses, but also palatinal and zygomatic recesses can exist. Although all skulls show an opening of the maxillary sinus into the middle nasal passage, access to the upper and lower nasal passage can also be found in some of the skulls. Partly, there is a close spatial relation between the paranasal sinuses so that they merge into each other. However, the frontal and the sphenoidal sinus only exist in a few skulls of the infraorder Lemuriformes. The expansion and volume of the frontal sinus are quite variable. Due to the formation of a septum the cavity can be split. In most cases the right and left sphenoidal sinus are separated by a median septum only. On both sides of the septum there are often conches of the ethmoid bone. For a better classification of the determined volumes an index was calculated from the volume of the facial skull and the total volume of every single paranasal sinus as well as of the total volume of all paranasal sinuses. The higher values within the Indridae, Lemuridae and Daubentoniidae families tend to result in a greater volume of the paranasal sinuses in relation to the volume of the facial skull. The correlation analysis demonstrates that in contrast to the frontal and sphenoidal sinus the maxillary sinus shows the highest amount of significant correlations with all outer skull measurements in particular. The statistical comparison of the volumes of the maxillary sinus in strepsirrhine primates with the data of catarrhines and platyrrhines indicates that there are similarities between catarrhines and strepsirrhines regarding the size of the skull. The platyrrhines, however, show significant differences in comparison to the other two groups, which presumably makes the platyrrhines stand out among the others. This gives space for new interpretations concerning the evolution of this group.
