  • This thesis investigates coronal DVT images of the skull and three dimensional surface reconstructions of 19 gibbon skulls (hylobatidae) from three different postnatal age groups. The results aim at attaining new insights of possible factors that influence the morphology of the paranasal sinuses of hominoids (humans and great apes). Regarding the pneumatisation of the gibbon skull, the nasal cavity shows a long and stretched shape, which is influenced by an extension of the sphenoidal sinus. The maxillary sinuses are characterized by an almost symmetrical location to both sides of the nasal cavity. In some parts, vertically angled septa were found along with small recessus. A high degree of variation of the sphenoidal sinus was found in relation to their volume and shape. One important finding was the occurrence of sporadic recessus, in particular within the intraorbital region. Moreover, a characteristic feature of the gibbon skull is a close topographic connection of these recessus to the orbita as well as to the maxillary sinus. Ethmoidal and frontal sinuses do not occur within hylobatidae. Sporadically, voids were found within the lateral septum of the nasal cavity which resembles cellulae ethmoidales. The frontal bone was solely characterized by sporadic wide-meshed diploe. Furthermore, we were able to discover that protrusions of the sinus paranasales towards the orbita, especially at the skull of symphalangus, refer to a connection between the vocalization of the gibbon and the pneumatisation of its skull. The gibbon hard palates, in most cases, had an ellipsoid shape. With growing age their vault increased and had an almost rectangular shape within the dorsal region. The statistical analysis showed that the morphology of the hard palate of the gibbon skulls had only a small influence on the size of the maxillary sinus. Furthermore, the analysis showed that humans and gibbons differ in terms of morphological relations between the hard palates and the maxillary sinus.
