S. Clemens, Ms. Sahar Habib Combined glaucoma- and cataract surgery with trabeculectomy and deep sclerectomy Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the efficacy and safety of combined surgery. Methods: The author conducted a retrospective review of the records of 53 consecutive eyes of 53 patients who underwent combined surgery with cataractsurgery and trabeculectomy in one group and cataractsurgery and deep sclerectomy in the other group. All surgery was done by one surgeon. All patients had at least 6 month follow- up concerning intraocular pressure (IOP), visual acuity, visual field and more. Results: The pressure regulation succeeded in about 80% of the eyes without antiglaucoma medications in both groups. An increase of visual acuity included all patients with macular degeneration could be reached in 90%. More complications were observed in the trabeculectomy- group included the presence of hyphaema in 9,4% of the cases. Conclusion: Both techniques of combined cataract and glaucoma surgery proved to be efficient and safe procedures to control IOP and to improve visual acuity.
