  • The present study describes the morphology of nasal cavity of strepsirrhine primates on the basis of micro-CT scans. The study is based on a sample of 24 mainly adult skulls, which were split into two strepsirrhine suborders – loriformes and lemuriformes. For all skulls reconstructions of the nasal cavity volume and three-dimensional reconstructions were made by using the WinSurf® 4.0 software. The strepsirrhine nasal fossa is a relatively long-stretched chamber. The anterior part is narrow and high while the dorsal part is rather wide and flat. Numerous bony turbinals, which vary from simple folds to branching scrolls, originate from the lateral nasal wall. Some strepsirrhine families, such as Galagonidae, Loridae, Cheirogaleidae, Lepilemuridae and Lemuridae families, differ in their nasal morphology. In these species there can be found additional connections to the adjancent maxillary sinus. The dorsal part of nasal cavity is separated by a horizontal lamina into a posterior-superior olfactory recess and posterior-inferior nasopharyngeal duct. The expansion of olfactory recess in loriformes is more dominant than in lemuriformes. The absolute volume of the nasal cavity also differ between the two strepsirrhine suborders. For a better classification of the determined volume an index was calculated from the volume of the nasal cavity and the volume of the facial skull. The study findings show no significant differences for the relative nasal cavity volume between lemuriformes and loriformes. Thus, it can be pointed out that the nasal cavity of loriformes und lemuriformes tend to have a similar size in relation to the volume of facial skull. The nasal cavity volume is highly correlated with different cranial external and internal dimensions. This findings support the specific role of the nose as a central construction element of the facial skull. The comparison of this study´s data capturing nasal cavity volume of the strepsirrhine primates with previous studies on catarrhines and platyrrhines primates show similarities between these three primate groups in terms of their size of skull. The results of the present study highlight the functional morphology of the nasal cavity of relatively basal primates. Hence, the study results contribute to a better understanding of the phylogenetic development of human beeings. In addition, this study provides the basis for further biometric studies due to the precise nasal cavity volume measurements.
