  • Changes in the concentration of chlorhexidine in saliva after use of a chlorhexidine-containing mouthwash were analyzed in a prospective, randomized, blinded, single-center, open controlled study. With increasing duration of the application, a continuous increase in the concentration of chlorhexidine could be shown immediately after rinsing. Concentrations were shown to remain constant over a period of 12 hours after rinsing. Moreover, it could be statistically demonstrated that during application of the mouthwash in a conventional dosage, measurable concentrations of, and thus an exposure to, carcinogenic p-chloroaniline, but not p-chloronitrobenzene, occurred in saliva. However, absorption of chlorhexidine, p-chloroaniline or p-chloronitrobenzene with detectable quantities in serum and urine could not be shown.
