  • Cardiovascular disease and periodontitis have a high prevalence in Germany. Beta-Blockers are an adjuvant treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. Aim of the study was to investigate the influence of beta-blockers for the development of periodontitis and the systemical alteration that go along with this disease. The bases for this study are SHIP-0 and SHIP-1. The following results are to be found in SHIP-0: There are no associations between periodontal parameters und beta-blockers. Greater attachment loss is connected with increased low-density lipoprotein, fibrinogen and more leukocytes. These associations could not be confirmed under the treatment with beta-blockers. SHIP-1 shows the influence of 5 years beta-blocker treatment on the periodontium. The following results are found: Beta-blockers are associated with significantly more attachment loss >=6mm. With the changing of the attachment loss >=6mm volunteers with beta-blocker taking have more teeth than volunteers without beta-blocker taking.
