  • The styloid process has been described morphologically and topographically and relationships between defined parameters of the process and selected parameters of the skull and of soft tissues have been examined. This investigations were based on 122 existing DVT records on adult male and female probands, who have been surveyed using the NewTom 3G Software. Possible influences of age and gender have been taken into account. The morphology of the styloid process turned out to be very variable with length dimensions between 8 mm an 88 mm and anterior tilt angles between 17 and 103 degrees. The average length of the styloid process of male probands was 36 mm, which was significantly longer than 30 mm of the female probands. A relationship between the length of the styloid process and the age could not be confirmed. The orientation of the styloid process was found to be independent of age and sex. In most cases both styloid processes were arranged in bilateral symmetry. The distance of the styloid process to most of the measuring points of head turned out to be significantly shorter in female probands. The values of length, angle and distances of the styloid process have been tested for any correlations but no such correlations could be confirmed. Therefore the variation of the styloid process was independent of skull and soft tissue parameters.
