• Hintergrund Die stetig steigende Anzahl von akademischen Veröffentlichungen macht es zunehmend schwierig, Publikationen zu identifizieren, welche die neuesten wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse repräsentieren und es ermöglichen, auf dem neuesten Stand der Forschung und evidenzbasierter Behandlungsempfehlungen zu bleiben. Ziel Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Suchstrategien und Auswahlpräferenzen zu untersuchen, die verschiedene akademisch tätigen Zahnärzte bei der Auswahl der fünf bedeutendsten Publikationen aus dem Jahres 2016 im Fachgebiet der Kinderzahnheilkunde verwendeten. Design Die fünf an der Studie teilnehmenden Zahnärzte wurden gebeten, ohne untereinander darüber zu kommunizieren, die Datenbanken PubMed, Google Scholar und Livivo zu durchsuchen. Zudem sollten sie dabei ihre individuelle Suchstrategie dokumentieren. Die Aus-wahlkriterien wurden anschließend gemäß einer 10-Punkte-Checkliste evaluiert. Der Evidenzlevel der identifizierten Publikationen wurde anschließend gemäß ihrer Publikationsart bewertet. Ergebnisse Alle Studienteilnehmer wählten unterschiedliche Publikationen ohne Überschneidungen aus. Alle von ihnen ausgewählten Publikationen waren Zeitschriftenartikel. Neunzehn Artikel wurden in der Datenbank PubMed identifiziert, jeweils drei Artikel wurden in Google Scholar und Livivo gefunden. Die Relevanz des Artikels für die klinische Entscheidungsfindung war das wichtigste Kriterium bei der Auswahl durch die Teilnehmer. Fazit Die persönlichen Interessen und Fachgebiete der Kliniker beeinflussten die Auswahl der Zeitschriftenartikel in erheblichem Maße. Dies könnte die interindividuelle Variabilität der diagnostischen und therapeutischen Ansätze erklären, die bei Zahnärzten beobachtet wer-den kann, und trägt wahrscheinlich zu einer Verbreiterung des Wissenspools bei. Dies wird jedoch richtigerweise durch evidenzbasierte Behandlungsempfehlungen komplementiert, was die Qualität der Behandlung überregional sicherstellt.
• Background The rising number of publications makes it difficult to identify those articles that are needed to stay up-to-date with the latest scientific findings and evidence-based recommendations. Aim The aim of the study was to record the search preferences of five different dentists with regard to their selection of the five most valuable publications issued in the year 2016 in the field of pediatric dentistry. Material & methods The participants were identical with the five authors of this article. Four of them are pediatric dentists, whereas one (JCT) is dedicated to patients with orofacial pain and/or dysfunction of the masticatory system. The participants were asked to include independently from one another the following five databases in their search: • PubMed (URL: https://www.pubmed.gov) • Livivo (URL: https://www.livivo.de) • Google Scholar (URL: https://scholar.google.de ; https.scholar.google.ch) • Directory of Open Access Journals (URL: https://www.doaj.org) • Free Medical Journals <www.freemedicaljournals.com> Additional electronic and other sources could be considered. The individual search strategies were documented. The selection criteria were assessed by using a 10-point checklist (Fig. 1); multiple answers were allowed. The identified publications were evaluated according to their publication type (e.g., systematic review, article about a randomized controlled trial, etc.). Results There was no overlap among the publications chosen by the participants, i.e., 25 different contributions were selected. All of them were journal articles. Nineteen papers were identified via PubMed, while three were found in Google Scholar and in Livivo, respectively (Table 1) The search topics of the five participants were “pediatric dentistry” combined with either “caries prevention,” “caries therapy,” “diagnosis,” “craniomandibular disorders,” “pain,” “orthodontics” or “autotransplantation of teeth”. Details of the searches are displayed in Table 1 (column 2). The main criteria for the individual selection of the participants were the relevance of a particular article for clinical decision-making (n = 20/72 answers), followed by its significance for patient education (n = 15) and by a high evidence level (n = 11). Five publications were articles about randomized and seven uncontrolled clinical trials, respectively, while four articles reported the results of non-randomized clinical trials. Furthermore, three systematic reviews and three narrative reviews were selected. Conclusion Considerable interindividual differences were detected with regard to the selection of articles perceived by dentists as being personally relevant. This shows that the concept of evidence-based dentistry is far away of being a form of “cookbook medicine.” Instead, the dental literature offers a great variety of high-quality publications that may be useful for care providers devoted to the dental problems of children.
