  • The present study examined the influence of emotional intelligence and alexithymia on the outcome of inpatient psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy in Germany. Furthermore, statements about the development of alexithymia and emotional intelligence in the course of the twelve-week hospital stay. 348 hospitalized patients were compared with the German versions of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R) and the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT 2.0) at two different times during the treatment studied (admission and discharge date). Patients were treated with psychoanalytic-oriented individual and group therapy. In contrast to the hypothetical assumption was the severity of alexithymia and the degree of emotional intelligence has no effect on the overall burden of mental change as a positive indicator of the success of treatment. In the course of treatment was a significant improvement in both the GSI values of the SCL-90-R and to observe a significant reduction in alexithymia levels. In contrast, the total value of emotional intelligence is no significant change. The individual tests of emotional intelligence were different and sometimes unexpected results. This lead us to suppose that there are differences within the group of patients, leading to either improving or deteriorating emotionally intelligent skills in the course of treatment .. This could be the subject of further investigations. In the literature already described negative correlation between emotional intelligence and alexithymia could be confirmed by the work.
