  • Acute intoxications are frequent indications for an admission to an intensive care unit. Most intoxications are either related to suicidal behaviour or to drug overdose, mostly associated with an underlying substance abuse. A retrospective survey of 1172 intoxications in a medical emergency department in Stuttgart, the capital of Germany’s South-West-State - admissions of the years 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010 - are analysed and examined for intoxication trends. After a significant increase of heroin intoxications between 1980 and 1990, we found a decrease of heroin intoxications in the following decades, most likely due to political and therapeutical implications and substitution policy. On the other hand we observed an alarming increase of intoxications with a combination of different drugs (often including new synthetic ones) in 2000 and 2010 and a shift towards relatively more female and also towards older patients. Implications for adjusting our medical and psychiatric treatment facilities and strategies are discussed.
