  • Complexes with σ2P=C-ligands have been much less studied than such of phosphine ligands and open new fields in the search for catalytic applications of trivalent phosphorus compounds. Furthermore, addition reactions at the P=C bond offer alternative strategies for the synthesis of phosphine ligands. To use 1H-1,3-benzazaphospholes as P=C ligands and building blocks, more convenient syntheses of N-methylated benzazaphospholes as well as a first route to N-asymmetrically substituted benzazaphospholes were developed. Key steps of these syntheses are alkyl- and catalytic arylamination, catalytic arylphosphonylation, reduction of the resulting phosphonic acid ester with LiAlH4 and subsequent cyclocondensation of the o-phosphinoanilines with dimethylformamide dimethylacetale. For N-primary o-phosphinoanilines an alternative cyclocondensation with excess paraformaldehyde is accompanied by concomitant N-methylation. Polarity controlled reactions of 2-unsubstituted benzazaphospholes with tBuLi allow substitution in 2-position and addition at the P=C bond, respectively, and introduction of functional groups. The conversions of N-asymmetric benzazaphospholes with tBuLi in THF or Et2O gave mixtures of the products of direct 2-CH-lithiation (P=CLi) and of the addition at the P=C bond. Selective CH-lithiation in THF or Et2O was achieved by addition of KOtBu, whereas regiospecific additions to tBuP-CHLi-species occurred in hexane/Et2O. The coordination properties of the σ2P-ligands were explored mainly by use of the easily accessible 1-neopentyl-1,3-benzazaphosphole. Cu(I)- and Ag(I)-benzazaphosphole complexes with d1010-electron configuration were synthesized as stabilisation by backbonding was expected. Using a reactant ratio of benzazaphosphole (L) to MX 1:1 resulted in L2MX complexes (X = Cl, Br), preferably with µ-X-bridges and two terminal ligands L. For L2CuBr an additional isomer with terminal bromide and µ-bridging benzazaphosphole ligand was obtained. The NMR spectra display generally, independently of the type, more or less strong upfield coordination shifts of the 31P signals, indicative of back bonding. Broad bands, particularly in the 31P NMR spectra, are attributed to kinetic lability of the complexes. An analogous upfield shift and line broadening gave evidence also for complex formation of HgCl2 with neopentylbenzazaphosphole. 2-(o-Diphenylphosphino-phenyl)benzazaphosphole formed Mo(CO)4- and HgCl2-P,P´-chelate complexes. Crystal structure analyses showed that Mo(0) is only slightly tilted out of the benzazaphosphole ring plane whereas Hg2+ is coordinated weakly and almost perpendicular to the ring plane. A cationic d8-Rh(I)(COD)-complex with another 2-phosphino-benzazaphosphole P,P´-ligand proved to be unstable and added traces of moisture at the P=C bond. Labile LW(CO)5 /Ag+ SbF6− complexes, formed from (neopentylbenzazaphosphole)W(CO)5 and AgSbF6, behave as efficient catalysts for ring-opening polymerizations as well as copolymerization of tetrahydrofuran, oxetane and epoxides. Dihydrobenzazaphosphol-2-carboxylic acids, prepared via addition of tBuLi at the P=C bond of benzazaphospholes and subsequent reaction with CO2, react with Ni(COD)2 in the presence of ethylene to highly active catalysts for the formation of waxy, low-molecular weight linear polyethylenes with methyl and vinyl end groups.
