• This cumulative dissertation consists of six consecutive chapters, the core of which are three individual articles, embedded in a theoretical and contextual background in the first four chapters, and jointly discussed in the concluding chapters. Each article is a self-contained treatise and can be read independently. However, the three articles are linked by a common thread that places regional actors, their actions and the consequences for regional development at the centre of all contributions. This forms the foundation of this dissertation. Following the structure of the dissertation, it is recommended to take a look at the articles after the fourth chapter and subsequently proceed with the remaining chapters. The first article focuses on micro-mechanisms that can hinder green transition processes and create a dominant maintenance agency. The second article examines place leadership mechanisms that can enable the overcoming of barriers and shape the perceptions of regional opportunity spaces. This forms the basis for the third article, which analyses differences in regional actor constellations and the importance of intermediaries in the context of green transitions in peripheral regions.
