Die COPD ist einer Erkrankung mit variablen Erscheinungsbild. Es bestehen multiple Faktoren, welche auf die Prognose der Erkrankung Einfluß haben. Ein wichtigen Prognosefaktor stellt die kardiopulmonale Leistungsfähigkeit dar. Diese lässt sich mit kontrollierten Belastungstests eruieren. Ein Standardverfahren stellt die Spiroergometrie mit Erhebung der Spitzensauerstoffaufnahme dar. Mittels der Spiroergometrie steht ein zuverlässiges Diagnostikum zur Evaluation von COPD-Patienten zu Verfügung.
