Bradyrhizobium diazoefficiens, a bacterial symbiont of soybean and other leguminous plants, enters a nodulation‐promoting genetic programme in the presence of host‐produced flavonoids and related signalling compounds. Here, we describe the crystal structure of an isoflavonoid‐responsive regulator (FrrA) from Bradyrhizobium, as well as cocrystal structures with inducing and noninducing ligands (genistein and naringenin, respectively). The structures reveal a TetR‐like fold whose DNA‐binding domain is capable of adopting a range of orientations. A single molecule of either genistein or naringenin is asymmetrically bound in a central cavity of the FrrA homodimer, mainly via C–H contacts to the π‐system of the ligands. Strikingly, however, the interaction does not provoke any conformational changes in the repressor. Both the flexible positioning of the DNA‐binding domain and the absence of structural change upon ligand binding are corroborated by small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) experiments in solution. Together with a model of the promoter‐bound state of FrrA our results suggest that inducers act as a wedge, preventing the DNA‐binding domains from moving close enough together to interact with successive positions of the major groove of the palindromic operator.
Abstract
Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is produced annually during olive oil extraction and contains most of the health‐promoting 3‐hydroxytyrosol of the olive fruit. To facilitate its recovery, enzymatic transesterification of hydroxytyrosol (HT) was directly performed in an aqueous system in the presence of ethyl acetate, yielding a 3‐hydroxytyrosol acetate rich extract. For this, the promiscuous acyltransferase from Pyrobaculum calidifontis VA1 (PestE) was engineered by rational design. The best mutant for the acetylation of hydroxytyrosol (PestE_I208A_L209F_N288A) was immobilized on EziG2 beads, resulting in hydroxytyrosol conversions between 82 and 89 % in one hour, for at least ten reaction cycles in a buffered hydroxytyrosol solution. Due to inhibition by other phenols in OMWW the conversions of hydroxytyrosol from this source were between 51 and 62 %. In a preparative scale reaction, 13.8 mg (57 %) of 3‐hydroxytyrosol acetate was extracted from 60 mL OMWW.
Abstract
Background
Twenty five‐hydroxy vitamin D (25OHD) levels have been proposed to protect against periodontitis based on in vitro and observational studies but evidence from long‐term randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is lacking. This study tested whether genetically proxied 25OHD is associated with periodontitis using Mendelian randomization (MR).
Methods
Genetic variants strongly associated with 25OHD in a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) of 417,580 participants of European ancestry were used as instrumental variables, and linked to GWAS summary data of 17,353 periodontitis cases and 28,210 controls. In addition to the main analysis using an inverse variance weighted (IVW) model, we applied additional robust methods to control for pleiotropy. We also undertook sensitivity analyses excluding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) used as instruments with potential pleiotropic effects and used a second 25OHD GWAS for replication. We identified 288 SNPs to be genome‐wide significant for 25OHD, explaining 7.0% of the variance of 25OHD levels and providing ≥90% power to detect an odds ratio (OR) of ≤ 0.97.
Results
MR analysis suggested that a 1 standard deviation increase in natural log‐transformed 25OHD was not associated with periodontitis risk (IVW OR = 1.04; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.97–1.12; P‐value = 0.297). The robust models, replication, and sensitivity analyses were coherent with the primary analysis.
Conclusions
Collectively, our findings suggest that 25OHD levels are unlikely to have a substantial effect on the risk of periodontitis, but large long‐term RCTs are needed to derive definitive evidence on the causal role of 25OHD in periodontitis.
Abstract
Root phenology influences the timing of plant resource acquisition and carbon fluxes into the soil. This is particularly important in fen peatlands, in which peat is primarily formed by roots and rhizomes of vascular plants. However, most fens in Central Europe are drained for agriculture, leading to large carbon losses, and further threatened by increasing frequency and intensity of droughts. Rewetting fens aims to restore the original carbon sink, but how root phenology is affected by drainage and rewetting is largely unknown.
We monitored root phenology with minirhizotrons in drained and rewetted fens (alder forest, percolation fen and coastal fen) as well as its soil temperature and water table depth during the 2018 drought. For each fen type, we studied a drained site and a site that was rewetted ~25 years ago, while all the sites studied had been drained for almost a century.
Overall, the growing season was longer with rewetting, allowing roots to grow over a longer period in the year and have a higher root production than under drainage. With increasing depth, the growing season shifted to later in time but remained a similar length, and the relative importance of soil temperature for root length changes increased with soil depth.
Synthesis and applications. Rewetting extended the growing season of roots, highlighting the importance of phenology in explaining root productivity in peatlands. A longer growing season allows a longer period of carbon sequestration in form of root biomass and promotes the peatlands' carbon sink function, especially through longer growth in deep soil layers. Thus, management practices that focus on rewetting peatland ecosystems are necessary to maintain their function as carbon sinks, particularly under drought conditions, and are a top priority to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change.
Abstract
Background
Several leech species of the genera Hirudo, Hirudinaria, and Whitmania are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the oral treatment of disorders associated with blood stasis. Among them, the non‐hematophagous leech Whitmania pigra expresses a variety of components that have the potential to act on the vertebrate blood coagulation system.
Objective
Whether the thrombin inhibitor hirudin, probably the most prominent leech‐derived anticoagulant, is actually present in Whitmania pigra, is still a matter of debate. To answer that open question was the aim of the study.
Methods
We identified several putative hirudin‐encoding sequences in transcriptome data of Whitmania pigra. Upon gene synthesis and molecular cloning the respective recombinant proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, processed, and eventually functionally characterized for thrombin‐inhibitory potencies in coagulation assays.
Results
We were successful in the identification and functional characterization of several putative hirudins in Whitmania pigra. Some, but not all, of these factors are indeed thrombin inhibitors. Whitmania pigra hence expresses both hirudins (factors that inhibit thrombin) and hirudin‐like factors (that do not or only very weakly inhibit thrombin). Furthermore, we revealed the exon/intron structures of the corresponding genes. Coding sequences of some putative hirudins of Whitmania pigra were present also in transcriptome datasets of Hirudo nipponia, a hematophagous leech that is likewise used in TCM.
Conclusions
Based on both structural and functional data we provide very strong evidence for the expression of hirudins in Whitmania pigra. This is the first description of hirudins in a non‐hematophagous leech.
Abstract
Surface waters are warming due to climate change, potentially pushing aquatic organisms closer to their thermal tolerance limits. However, cyanobacterial blooms are expected to occur more often with rising temperature, increasing the likelihood of poor‐quality food available for herbivorous zooplankton. Zooplankton can adapt locally by genetic differentiation or via adaptive phenotypic plasticity to increasing temperatures, but there is limited knowledge on how these processes may be affected by food quality limitation imposed by cyanobacteria.
To test the effects of cyanobacteria‐mediated food quality on local temperature adaptation, we measured juvenile somatic growth and reproduction of five Daphnia magna clones from different latitudinal origin grown on three food qualities at 20, 24, and 28°C. Additionally we estimated short‐term heat tolerance, measured as knockout time (time to immobility) at lethally high temperature, of two clones acclimated to the three temperatures and two food quality levels to test for the effects of food quality on adaptive plastic responses.
As expected, clones from lower latitudes showed on average better somatic growth and reproduction than clones from higher latitudes at higher temperatures. However, the difference in somatic growth diminished with increasing cyanobacteria abundance in the diet, suggesting constraints on local genetic adaptation under predicted decreases in food quality. As expected, short‐term heat tolerance of the clones generally increased with increasing acclimation temperature. However, heat tolerance of animals acclimated to the highest temperature was larger when grown at medium than at good food quality, whereas the opposite response was observed for animals acclimated to the lowest temperature. This suggests a better adaptive phenotypic response of animals to elevated temperatures under higher cyanobacteria abundance, and thus shows an opposite pattern to the results for somatic growth.
Overall, we demonstrate that food quality limitation can mediate responses of D. magna life history traits and heat tolerance to increasing temperatures, and that the effects differ depending on the time scale studied, that is, mid‐term (somatic growth) versus short‐term (tolerance to acute heat stress). These aspects will need further attention to accurately predict of how organisms will cope with future global warming by local adaptation and adaptive phenotypic plasticity.
Abstract
Introduction
Using the situated expectancy–value theory, it becomes possible to explain motivational functioning across alternating learning conditions not only at a particular moment but also over time. The situated expectancy–value theory provides evidence for the critical role of context. The present research examines how adolescents' success expectancies, task values, and effort develop when the conditions of the academic environment change. It also evaluates whether adolescents adopt more adaptive expectancy–value profiles in response to the need‐based nature of self‐directed learning as an extension of regular instruction. Within the self‐directed learning approach under investigation, adolescents take responsibility for their own learning processes.
Methods
The present research offers insights into the expectancy–value profiles of 754 German adolescents (Mage = 13.56; SD = 1.2; 49.4% female). A four‐wave study was used to examine perceptions of self‐efficacy, intrinsic value, utility value, and effort. Latent profile analyses and latent transition analyses were employed.
Results
Notably, the results provide evidence that expanding instruction via self‐directed learning intervals that occur for 1 week per semester contributes to more favorable expectancy–value profiles within a student's favorite subject. A mixed profile (highly confident, hardly interested) disappeared. Instead, success expectations aligned more closely with adolescents' task values and effort. All profiles settled at a higher level.
Conclusions
The findings indicate that instruction that is expanded via self‐directed learning intervals has positive consequences for motivational profiles over time. An initial self‐directed learning episode led to a shift to more interested profile groups. The continuation of a positive trend even after a self‐directed learning interval indicates that adolescents are able to continually adapt their learning to their needs during teacher‐directed instruction. This study provides clues about how to design curricula in a way that counteracts the downward trend in students' motivation to learn.
Abstract
Chiral and enantiopure amines can be produced by enantioselective transaminases via kinetic resolution of amine racemates. This transamination reaction requires stoichiometric amounts of co‐substrate. A dual‐enzyme recycling system overcomes this limitation: l‐amino acid oxidases (LAAO) recycle the accumulating co‐product of (S)‐selective transaminases in the kinetic resolution of racemic amines to produce pure (R)‐amines. However, availability of suitable LAAOs is limited. Here we use the heterologously produced, highly active fungal hcLAAO4 with broad substrate spectrum. H2O2 as byproduct of hcLAAO4 is detoxified by a catalase. The final system allows using sub‐stoichiometric amounts of 1 mol% of the transaminase co‐substrate as well as the initial application of l‐amino acids instead of α‐keto acids. With an optimized protocol, the synthetic potential of this kinetic resolution cascade was proven at the preparative scale (>90 mg) by the synthesis of highly enantiomerically pure (R)‐methylbenzylamine (>99 %ee) at complete conversion (50 %).
Objective
To evaluate the efficacy of tooth splinting (TS) and occlusal adjustment (OA) compared to no TS or OA in patients with periodontitis exhibiting masticatory dysfunction.
Material
The primary outcome criterion was tooth loss (TL), and the secondary outcome parameters were change in probing pocket depth (PPD), change in clinical attachment level (CAL), tooth mobility (TM), and patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs). Literature search was performed on three electronic databases (from 01/1965 to 04/2021) and focused on clinical studies with at least 12 months follow‐up.
Results
From a total of 1515 publications, 51 articles were identified for full‐text reading, of which 2 retrospective case series on TS with low risk of bias and 1 randomized and 2 prospective studies on OA with unclear risk of bias were included. For TS, synthesis of data showed that in 72 patients, 26 out of 311 teeth (weighted mean incidence of TL 8.4%) and 156 out of 1541 teeth with no TS (weighted mean incidence of TL 10.1%) were lost over 2 years following non‐surgical periodontal therapy. The randomized controlled clinical trial (RCT) indicated CAL gain for teeth with OA compared to no OA. For the effect of OA on TL, PPD, and TM, heterogeneous data were retrieved from the included studies.
Conclusions
Within the limitations of this review and based on a low level of evidence, it is concluded that TS does not improve survival of mobile teeth in patients with advanced periodontitis. OA on teeth with mobility and/or premature contacts may lead to improved CAL, while the effect of OA on the remaining periodontal parameters remains unclear.
Abstract
Pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) has become a species of interest in aquaculture. It is a popular and economically valuable food fish and can produce high numbers of offspring. However, during early development, there are transition phases when high mortality rates concur with growth changes, vital organ transformations and a limited energy budget. Up to now, no study focused on the developmental adaption of muscle tissue in pikeperch, regardless of muscle tissue influencing essential traits such as locomotion and thus the competence to hunt prey and avoid predators. In the present study, therefore, the developmental myogenesis of pikeperch was analysed using specimens from early embryonic to larval development. Myogenic and developmental genes were utilized to gain insights into transcriptomic regulation during these stages by applying a nanofluidic qPCR approach. Result, three phases of myogenic gene expression, during somitogenesis, during the late embryonic development and during the larval development were detected. Increased myostatin expression showed an interim arrest of muscle formation between embryonic and larval myogenesis. Expression patterns of satellite cell gene markers indicated an accumulation of stem cells before myogenesis interruption. The here gained data will help to broaden the knowledge on percid myogenesis and can support pikeperch rearing in aquaculture.
Abstract
First Aid Kits are collections of the most important medical equipment required for quick medical assistance. Similarly, enzyme kits can provide a proficient, ready‐ and easy‐to‐use collection of biocatalysts that can be applied with high reproducibility. In this article, we illustrate how kits of oxyfunctionalisation enzymes could operate as synthetic ‘First Aid’ for chemists working on complex natural product total synthesis in an early‐ or late‐stage fashion, as well as in lead diversification in drug discovery processes. We reason that enzyme kits could catalyse the integration of biocatalysis into (synthetic) organic chemistry and describe how we envision their future application.
Abstract
Purpose
Depressive disorders in children and adolescents have an enormous impact on their general quality of life. There is a clear need to effectively treat depression in this age group. Effects of psychotherapy can be enhanced by involving caregivers. In our systematic review and meta‐analysis, we examine for the first time the effects of caregiver involvement in depression‐specific interventions for children and adolescents.
Methods
We included randomized controlled trials examining the effects of interventions for children and adolescents with depression involving their caregivers or families compared to interventions without including caregivers. Primary outcome was the severity of childhood and adolescent depression.
Results
Overall, 19 randomized controlled trials could be included (N = 1553) that were highly heterogeneous regarding outcome measures or the extent of caregiver integration. We were able to include k = 17 studies in our meta‐analysis and find a small but significant effect for family‐involved interventions against active control conditions without family‐involvement at post intervention (α = 0.05, d = 0.34; [0.07; 0.60]; p = .01).
Conclusions
We detected an overall significant but small effect of family/caregivers’ involvement compared to control groups without it. Structured, guideline‐based research is urgently needed to identify for which children/adolescents with depression, under what circumstances, and in what form the family should be effectively involved in their psychotherapy.
Abstract
Desulfarculus baarsii and Desulfurivibrio alkaliphilus are strictly anaerobic bacteria existing in marine sediments. D. baarsii gains energy through reducing sulphate and D. alkaliphilus is able to reduce elemental sulphur, thiosulphate and polysulphide in seawater. Both organisms were previously identified as key organisms in sediment derived, bidirectional electroactive biofilms. Here, we investigated the electrochemical performance of these two bacteria in bio‐electrochemical systems and their possible involvement in anodic and cathodic reactions. The results show that D. baarsii was unable to donate or accept electrons to/from an electrode, while D. alkaliphilus was able to catalyse both anodic and cathodic reactions and interact with the electrode through direct or potentially indirect electron transfer. Raman spectra of D. alkaliphilus electrode biofilms showed a high similarity to Geobacter sulfurreducens biofilms, including the specific bands of cytochromes b and c, explaining the electroactivity of D. alkaliphilus in bioelectrochemical reactions.
Background
Based on learned helplessness theory and conservation of resources theory, the present study explores the role of schools’ social environments (i.e., school belonging, school exclusion, and teacher–student relationships) as potential buffers and amplifiers in students’ development of learned helplessness during adolescence.
Aims
We examine whether school belonging, school exclusion, and teacher–student relationship moderate the longitudinal association of learned helplessness differently for students from low‐track schools and high‐track schools.
Sample
The study uses a sample of N = 1,088 (Mage = 13.70, SD = 0.53; 54% girls) adolescent students who participated in a two‐wave longitudinal study.
Methods
We conducted latent moderated structural equation modelling to examine whether school belonging, school exclusion, and teacher–student relationship moderate the longitudinal association of learned helplessness differently for students from low‐track schools and high‐track schools.
Results
The moderation analyses revealed that students from both school tracks are differently affected by school belonging and school exclusion in their development of learned helplessness. Teacher–student relationship did not moderate the association.
Conclusion
Our findings underline the important role of the social environment in students’ development of learned helplessness. Particularly, the differential effects found for the different educational tracks highlight the necessary awareness of educators to interindividual differences of their students.
Abstract
We investigated four subaerial (paleo)lacustrine landforms at the north‐eastern shoreline of Schweriner See, north‐eastern Germany. These included two beach ridges, one subaerial nearshore bar and a silting up sequence located close to a fossil cliff, which marks the former maximum extent of Schweriner See. We used luminescence profiling with a SUERC portable OSL device (POSL) on all four sediment sequences in combination with sedimentological investigations such as grain size, loss‐on‐ignition and magnetic susceptibility to provide information on the various formations in a lacustrine depositional environment. The POSL reader was used on pre‐treated polymineral samples to gain an insight into luminescence distribution within the individual sediment sequences, but also among the four sequences. POSL proved valuable to understand depositional processes, which were not visible in lithology or sedimentological parameters. With somewhat larger uncertainty this method provides relative chronologies of the sediment sequences. Additionally, we carried out radiocarbon dating and full optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating to establish a chronological framework. OSL ages proved to be more reliable to date beach ridges in this setting than radiocarbon samples, which were severely influenced by sediment reworking. This combined approach of sedimentological analyses, luminescence profiling and absolute age determinations revealed details in depositional processes at Schweriner See which otherwise would have remained undetected. Furthermore, it helped to set these subaerial (paleo)lacustrine landforms in a chronological framework.
Background
Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is the most critical complication after pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). Preoperative identification of high-risk patients and optimal pancreatic reconstruction technique can be a way to reduce postoperative complications.
Methods
A series of 386 patients underwent PD over a 10-year period (2009–2019). On routinely performed preoperative computed tomography (CT) images, the ventro-dorsal diameters of duct (D) and parenchyma (P) were measured in the cutting plane at the superior mesenteric vein. Then, the ratio of both values was calculated (D/P ratio) Double-layer pancreatojejunostomy with alignment of duct and mucosa (ADAM) by two monofilament threads (MFT) was performed in 359 patients and pancreatogastrostomy (PG) in 27 patients. The incidence of POPF was diagnosed according to the International Study Group for Pancreatic Fistula criteria.
Results
The overall rate of POPF was 21% (n = 80), and the rate of clinically relevant type B/C fistulas 6.5% (n = 25). A D/P ratio of <0.2 was significantly associated with type B/C fistula (11%, p < 0.01). In low-risk patients (D/P ratio >0.2), type B/C fistula occurred only in 2%, and in high-risk patients (D/P ratio <0.2) in 9%. ADAM anastomosis was performed safely by two different surgeons. A PG anastomosis had double-digit POPF rates in all groups.
Conclusion
Preoperative CT imaging with D/P measurement may predict the risk of POPF development. A cut off D/P ratio of <0.2 was significantly associated with clinical relevant POPF. ADAM anastomosis may be an option for pancreatojejunostomy. However, preoperative knowledge of the D/P ratio could guide decision-making for primary pancreatectomy when pancreatic reconstruction is critical.
Background
Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, previous studies have shown that the physical as well as the mental health of children and adolescents significantly deteriorated. Future anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and its associations with quality of life has not previously been examined in school children.
Methods
As part of a cross-sectional web-based survey at schools in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany, two years after the outbreak of the pandemic, school children were asked about COVID-19-related future anxiety using the German epidemic-related Dark Future Scale for children (eDFS-K). Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) was assessed using the self-reported KIDSCREEN-10. The eDFS-K was psychometrically analyzed (internal consistency and confirmatory factor analysis) and thereafter examined as a predictor of HRQoL in a general linear regression model.
Results
A total of N = 840 8–18-year-old children and adolescents were included in the analysis. The eDFS-K demonstrated adequate internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's α = 0.77), and the confirmatory factor analysis further supported the one-factor structure of the four-item scale with an acceptable model fit. Over 43% of students were found to have low HRQoL. In addition, 47% of the students sometimes to often reported COVID-19-related fears about the future. Children with COVID-19-related future anxiety had significantly lower HRQoL (B = – 0.94, p < 0.001). Other predictors of lower HRQoL were older age (B = – 0.63, p < 0.001), and female (B = – 3.12, p < 0.001) and diverse (B = – 6.82, p < 0.001) gender.
Conclusion
Two years after the outbreak of the pandemic, school-aged children continue to exhibit low HRQoL, which is further exacerbated in the presence of COVID-19-related future anxiety. Intervention programs with an increased focus on mental health also addressing future anxiety should be provided.
ZusammenfassungDer Aufsatz bietet den ersten konsistenten Überblick über den Wandel der politischen Positionen der protestantischen Theologie in der DDR. Mit Hilfe von Anregungen aus der Cambridge School der Ideengeschichte geht der Text der Frage nach, inwieweit die ostdeutsche evangelische Theologie Resistenzpotential gegenüber dem politischen Anpassungsdruck des SED-Regimes aufzubringen vermochte. Dabei widersprechen die Autoren der in der Forschung verbreiteten Auffassung, die Protestanten hätten die Theologie in obrigkeitstreuer Tradition einmal mehr den neuen Verhältnissen angepasst. Vielmehr lässt sich ein deutlicher Bruch nach 1945 erkennen, eine jahrelang anhaltende Kritik an der atheistischen Regierung und ein theologisches Ringen um ein angemessenes Obrigkeitsverständnis. Erst äußere Anlässe brachten die Kirchen dazu, ihre fundamentalkritische Theologie Zug um Zug aufzugeben. Dazu gehört die Zementierung der deutschen Teilung, die den Rückhalt der ostdeutschen Kirchen in der gesamtdeutschen EKD schwächte, oder auch die Ungleichheit in der Verteilung der Machtmittel, die die Kirchen an den Staat auslieferten. Neben diesen strukturellen Gründen benennen die Autoren ideelle Motive wie die Kritik an der Institution EKD, durch die sich die jüngeren Theologen von der älteren Generation ablösen wollten. Einflussreich waren auch internationale ökumenische Diskurse, die seit den siebziger Jahren den Kapitalismus zunehmend kritisch und den Sozialismus entsprechend positiv einordneten. Obwohl die wenigen verbliebenen Christen sich immer wieder unangepasst verhielten, ließ sich die Theologie insgesamt mehr und mehr zur Rechtfertigung des Anpassungsweges einspannen. Nicht sie bestimmte die politische Haltung. Vielmehr gaben äußere Faktoren die theologischen Positionsbestimmungen der Kirche vor.
In order to identify possible experimental signatures of the superfluid to Mott-insulator quantum phase transition we calculate the charge structure factor S(k, ω) for the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model using the dynamical density-matrix renormalisation group (DDMRG) technique. Particularly we analyse the behaviour of S(k, ω) by varying – at zero temperature–the Coulomb interaction strength within the first Mott lobe. For strong interactions, in the Mott-insulator phase, we demonstrate that the DDMRG results are well reproduced by a strong-coupling expansion, just as the quasi-particle dispersion. In the super-fluid phase we determine the linear excitation spectrum near k = 0. In one dimension, the amplitude mode is absent which mean-field theory suggests for higher dimensions.
Currently, poleward range expansions are observed in many taxa, often in response to anthropogenic climate change. At the expanding front, populations likely face cooler and more variable temperature conditions, imposing thermal selection. This may result in changes in trait means or plasticity, the relative contribution of which is not well understood. We, here, investigate evolutionary change in range‐expanding populations of the butterfly Pieris mannii, by comparing populations from the core and the newly established northern range under laboratory conditions. We observed both changes in trait means and in thermal reaction norms. Range‐expanding populations showed a more rapid development, potentially indicative of counter‐gradient variation and an increased cold tolerance compared with core populations. Genotype‐environment interactions prevailed in all associated traits, such that the above differences were restricted to cooler environmental conditions. In range‐expanding populations, plasticity was decreased in developmental traits enabling relatively rapid growth even under cooler conditions but increased in cold tolerance arguably promoting higher activity under thermally challenging conditions. Notably, these changes must have occurred within a time period of ca. 10 years only. Our results suggest, in line with contemporary theory, that the evolution of plasticity may play a hitherto underestimated role for adaptation to climatic variation. However, rather than generally increased or decreased levels of plasticity, our results indicate fine‐tuned, trait‐specific evolutionary responses to increase fitness in novel environments.
