- It was investigated in an open, controlled clinical study including 241 patients with planned cataract removal, if the application of PVP-iodine for preoperative eye antisepsis leads to resorption of iodine. Therefore PVP-I at concentrations of 10 or 1.25 % or an iodine-free antiseptic were applied to the conjunctiva and/or periorbital skin. The iodide excretion was determined preoperative as well as 24 h and 48 h after the operation. The resorption rate of the overall iodine was calculated from 0.24 to 1.77 %. Applying a 10 % PVP-I solution to the conjunctiva and/or periorbital skin lead to a significant rise of the renal iodine excretion. In groups where a 1.25 % PVP-I solution was used no mean significant rise of iodine excretion could be registered. However within the groups the number of patients reacting with an excessive iodine excretion (> 300 µg iodide/g creatinine) has increased. As a result of this study the use of 10 % PVP-I is obsolete. Performing preoperative eye antisepsis with 1.25 % PVP-I solution thyroid diseases have to be excluded before.
